On 7/04/2016, Hot Springs Police Officer Scrimshire was patrolling in the 4600 Block of Central Avenue and witnessed a 2015 camouflage Can-am Maverick (side by side) parked in the middle of the parking lot at EZ-Mart on Central Avenue.
After Officer Scrimshire pulled into the parking lot, he witnessed the side by side to be unoccupied and there was a white male sitting in front of the gas station. Officer Scrimshire recognized the subject sitting in front of the gas station and he is identified as Bobby Morgan, 33, of Hot Springs. Just a few short weeks prior to this incident Officer Scrimshire had arrested Mr. Morgan for an unrelated incident.
Ofc. Scrimshire entered the gas station and quizzed possible witnesses about the mystery off road vehicle. The witnesses stated that no one else was on the property and when the vehicle arrived on the lot is when Mr. Morgan was first noticed. Witnesses also stated that they had witnessed Mr. Morgan sitting in the side by side.
Mr. Morgan had attempted to leave the area but Ofc. Scrimshire found him in the 4700 Block of Central Avenue. Ofc. Scrimshire asked Mr. Morgan where the side by side came from and he allegedly stated “someone at a trailer park gave it to me and I don’t want it because it will not get out of first (gear)”. At that time Mr. Morgan was detained and transported back to 4600 Central Avenue.
Officer Scrimshire ran the VIN of the side by side and Hot Springs Police Dispatchers informed Ofc. Scrimshire that the vehicle returned to a trailer park on Central Avenue. A Yeti 45 (ice chest) was on the back of the side by side and the title for the vehicle was located in the glove box. Spray painted on top of the Yeti was the same name listed as the owner of the side by side.
The victim was contacted via telephone. The victim stated that he is currently out of town and the side by side was supposed to be parked under a shed at his residence. The victim additionally stated that no one had permission to drive it. The side by side is valued at approximately $20,000.00.
Mr. Morgan was placed under arrest and was transported to the Garland County Detention Center.
He is charged with Theft by Receiving.
His bond is set at $3,500.00.
