All suspects are presumed innocent until determined guilty in court.

Hot Springs Police Officer Sampson reports the following:

On 7/18/19 at approximately 1957 hours Officers were dispatched to the area of Linwood and South in reference to a disturbance.  While enroute dispatch advised they received more 911 calls and advised a black male wearing a red backpack with no shirt fired two rounds.  I, Officer Sampson #144, observed a male matching that description, later identified as Kevon Barenes, at the intersection of Linwood and Hobson.

Kevon Latrell Barenes, 19, of Clairmont Street in Hot Springs – Parole absconder allegedly fired off rounds inside city limits after an argument.

Barenes was advised to sit on the curb and remove is backpack from his person.  I explained the reasoning for making contact to Barenes as he removed his backpack.  Barenes told Officers that there was a pistol inside his backpack.  Officers located a silver and purple Sccy 9mm inside the bag.  The firearm had one round in the chamber and two rounds in the magazine.

An ACIC/NCIC check of Barenes revealed he had a valid Failure to Comply and an Absconder warrant out of Clark County.  Due to Officers locating a firearm inside Barenes backpack, I asked dispatch to check and see if Barenes was a convicted felon. Dispatch advised Barenes had been convicted of Theft by Receiving (B/Fel) and Fleeing (C/Fel).  The disposition date was 11/06/18.

I made contact with a female witness. She confirmed that Barenes was the one who fired the gun off in the air.  The witness advised Barenes got irate with her prior to the shots being fired.  Barenes told the witness “On Crip, I’ll fight a bitch.”  The witness advised as Barenes started walking off, he fired two shots in the air.  Barenes was in the area of Linwood and South Street by Jones School.  Officers located two casings at the intersection of Linwood and South.  One of the shell casings was an aluminum 9mm casing.  The firearm located on Barenes had the same 9mm brand and caliber bullet in the chamber as the casing located in the street.

Mr. Barenes was arrested and transported to the Garland County Detention Center for processing.  He is charged with Felony Possession Of A Firearm By Certain Persons, Disorderly Conduct, and Discharge Of Firearm In City Limits with a bond amount totaling $3,000, and a parole hold for Clark County.
