Garland County 911 Dispatchers received a call for a large, brush fire possibly in the area of Rock Creek Road last night.  As 70 West Fire Troops were responding (equipped to fight a brush fire), other callers to 911 quickly began reporting that the fire was huge and in the area of Windamere Road.  Arriving 911 Responders actually found the structure fire in the 600 Block of Springwood Road.

This pic was taken from the backyard of a residence across Lake Hamilton, off of Thornton Ferry Road. A view like this is what prompted residents in that area to alert authorities.

Garland County Sheriff’s Patrol Corporal Swinney was quick to arrive and assisted with clearing the path for arriving fire units.

When I arrived, 70 West Firefighters had ordered out more fire fighting resources and were already spraying water on the fire, several explosions could be heard which included the tires on the vehicles, possibly a small propane tank for the RV that was on fire and the batteries for an electric golf cart type vehicle.

2 storage shed structures and the 3 vehicles were all fully involved when the firefighters arrived.

Piney Fire Department was dispatched to assist as soon as the calls began coming in indicating that this was a structure fire situation.

At least 1 large house was in immediate danger of catching fire.  The trim and shutters were melted and damaged.  Witness(s) at the scene convinced firefighters that an elderly lady might be in that house.  Firefighters chopped down the front door and made entry to the home.  As it turns out, the elderly lady lives in a different house.  The house in immediate danger was not occupied at the time of the fire.  The owner and his family were away for dinner in town.

70 West Fire Chief Autumn Carlisle said that the fire appears to have started in connection to a neighbor burning leaves earlier in the day and possibly not completely extinguishing that burn.

Burn ban for Garland County was not in effect this date.  However, burn ban is in effect for City of Hot Springs.
