I spoke with Garland County Sheriff McCormick and GCSO CID Corporal Threadgill on Friday in reference to this fatal, Joy Terrace event, but am just now able to get the updated info out (on Tuesday just before midnight – due to my workload and schedule.  GCSO was very prompt with updating the information).

The item I was having trouble with was whether a shot had been fired from a gun inside the suspect vehicle AND, what was the intended target of that bullet?  Cpl. Threadgill explained that the suspect fired 1 round, fatally striking himself just before the vehicle he was fleeing in struck the tree in a head-on fashion.

People on the Arkansas 911 News Facebook Page commented under the post for the initial report on Saturday.  A few people claimed that “the cops” fired guns into the suspect vehicle, killing the suspect.  Lies.  I never heard that, this scene was not being handled as an officer involved shooting, no officers were downloaded, placed on administrative leave, the Arkansas State Police did not assume the investigation – none of that.  Sheriff McCormick clearly stated to me on Saturday that no officer fired any weapon during this event and that this was not an officer involved shooting.  I arrived on scene approximately 4 minutes after the crash and I never got an “officer involved shooting” vibe about the event the whole time I was there.  I departed the scene as the suspect vehicle was being secured to the flatbed wrecker truck (approximately 2 hours).

Next of kin has been notified.
