Piney Fire Department responded to the call for a structure fire yesterday morning around 7AM during a storm in the area of the 8000 Block of Highway 270 West.

PFD Chief Scott Miser said that responding units quickly discovered that a female burn victim had made it from the burning structure and out into the yard.  Chief Miser took charge of the patient and ordered LifeNet Medics to the scene.

Other arriving units attacked the fully involved structure fire that had already burned out of control before help arrived.

Before the fire was completely extinguished, it was discovered that splintered wood was all over the yard.  Chief Miser was able to determine that lightning had struck a tree adjacent to the trailer house.  The lightning blew chunks out of both sides of the tree then continued downward striking the occupied residence and the white car parked in the yard.  Chief Miser said that the lightning blew a hole in the windshield of the vehicle and entered the car.  The airbags in the car were deployed and the car’s computer got fried as a result of the lightning strike.

Neighbors said that the strike sounded like a huge explosion going off.

LifeNet Medics transported the victim (adult female) via ambulance to the awaiting Survival Flight Helicopter that was staged up the highway at a suitable landing zone.  The victim was flown to a burn center.

This storm produced lightning that also struck a property on Gillwood Road.  2 trees and the driveway were damaged at that location.  Go to that scene CLICK HERE.
