Arkansas State Police Trooper Whitney investigated a single vehicle rollover crash on Highway 70 East near the Rest Area this morning around midnight.

The Arkansas State Police Preliminary Fatal Crash Report says that the 1999 Toyota Tacoma truck was westbound when the driver lost control, crossed the entire highway, exited the left side  of the pavement, began to overturn, re-entered the highway, overturned several times before coming to final rest in the westbound lanes facing east.  The driver was ejected and came to final rest in the eastbound lanes.

Garland County Coroner Stuart Smedley reported and pronounced Colton Jim Owens, 25, of Pearcy, dead at the scene.  The Coroner’s Office took charge of the body and removed him from the scene.

A motorcycle traveling in the area at the time of the crash may have struck debris as it passed through the area of this crash.  The extent of that crash is not known to me.

The Garland County Sheriff’s Patrol assisted as necessary.

Hot Springs Police assisted by closing access to Highway 70 at the Bypass and possibly access to the eastbound Bypass Onramp at Malvern Avenue.

Highway 70 East was closed from the Bypass to the Rest Area for at least 2 hours.
