Fatal 18-Wheeler Crash On Bailey Hill – HOT SPRING COUNTY

Arkansas State Police Trooper Heinley investigated a fatal single vehicle 18-wheeler rash on Highway 270W at Bailey Hill yesterday morning.

Evidence at the scene suggested that the eastbound, fully loaded 18-wheeler exited the pavement at a curve, traveled a very short distance on the grassy roadside, struck a driveway culvert, continued on and smashed head-on into the tree line striking several large pine trees.  The trailer of the 18-wheeler continued into the back of the cab after impact.  The vehicle came to final rest jammed into the tree line.

Rockport Police, Hot Spring County Sheriff’s Patrol, Arkansas Highway PoliceMalvern Fire Department, Mt. Willow/Rockport Fire Department all assisted at the scene.  Also represented at the scene were were the Hot Spring County Coroner’s Office and Hot Spring County County Arkansas Department Of Emergency Management.

The crash snapped a large pine tree about 20 feet from the ground.  The tree limbs were piled up on the highway.

Killed in the crash is 51 year old Melvin Lee Junior of Hampton.

Fire department/rescue personnel had to cut trees with chainsaws in order to remove the truck from the woods.

Traffic flow was interrupted for several hours.
