Press Release – GARLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’s DEPARTMENT (Sergeant John Schroeder)

Sheriff Mike McCormick is pleased to announce that because of the hard work and dedication of our Chief Deputy of Corrections Steven Elrod and his staff, the Garland County Adult Detention Center and Juvenile Detention Center have both passed their PREA Audits with 100% compliance!  Upon review of our operations from a certified PREA Auditor, we have officially established ourselves as the forerunners for the State of Arkansas as the only operation in the State to be brought into full compliance with federal guidelines.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed in 2003 with unanimous support from both parties in Congress. The purpose of the act was to “provide for the analysis of the incidence and effects of prison rape in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide information, resources, recommendations and funding to protect individuals from prison rape.” (Prison Rape Elimination Act, 2003)
