I became aware of information today that made me believe the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was investigating a death in the water at the Big Fir Campground off of Highway 27, north of Mt. Ida at the extreme west end of Lake Ouachita.
I called the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and spoke with Sheriff David White. He explained that a body was found in the area of the Big Fir Campground, in shallow water. It appeared that the older male was well known for living in the area and, in fact, taking his baths in the lake water. Sheriff White also said that investigators believe that a medical emergency may have taken place while the man was swimming (or otherwise in the water) and that he may have accidentally drowned before he could get back the few feet it would have taken him to get out of the water.
Evidence at the scene indicated that the body had been in the water for some time. Investigators do not suspect foul play. The identity of the man is not being released until the next of kin have been notified. The next of kin have been identified, but they live out of state. Investigators are in the process of notifying them.
