National Park Ranger Summerlin investigated an injury crash on Blacksnake Road last week where an SUV came out of the hairpin turn and slammed head-on into a tree.
Evidence at the scene showed that the SUV was traveling down the hill and into a hairpin turn. The driver failed to negotiate the turn properly. As the SUV approached the apex of the curve, dramatic steering input acted to swing the rear of the vehicle leaving a critical speed scuff visible on the pavement where the yaw began. The tire mark continued across the center line and off the right side of the pavement. Once off the pavement, the SUV careened down the very steep hill and head-on into a tree. The impact stopped the vehicle immediately and it came to final rest with the tree rammed halfway into the engine compartment.
Piney Fire Troops responded quickly and assisted as necessary.
LifeNet dispatched an Ambulance Crew to the scene. They met with the injured driver, but did not transport him to the hospital.
Traffic flow was interrupted for approximately 45 minutes.
